Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a liquor license take?
It depends heavily on your state, county, and license class. A location with a straightforward beer-and-wine license in a non-quota state can move in a matter of weeks; a full-liquor license in a quota-restricted state or a location needing a public hearing can take several months. Our back-planner gives you a planning baseline once you tell us your target opening date; always confirm current processing times with your state ABC agency.
How much does a liquor license cost?
State application fees are usually the smallest part of the cost. Local fees, publication/posting costs, training, and (in quota states) the market cost of acquiring an existing license by transfer can all add up, and vary widely by state and county. Our Cost Estimator tool gives typical ranges for budgeting, not quotes, and links to your state's official fee schedule where we have it.
What is a quota license?
Some states cap the number of certain license classes issued in a county, usually tied to population. When a county is at or over quota, new operators typically acquire a license by transfer from an existing holder rather than applying for a brand-new one, and transfer prices can run well above the state's own fee because of that scarcity. Not every state uses a quota system; our seeded state data tells you plainly whether your state does.
Can I open while my license application is pending?
This depends entirely on your state and local rules, and we do not guess it for you. Some jurisdictions allow limited operation (food service without alcohol, for example) while an application is pending; others do not allow you to serve any alcohol until the license is fully issued. Ask your state ABC agency directly before you commit to an opening date that assumes otherwise.
Should I do a transfer or apply for a new license?
If your state's relevant class is quota-restricted and at capacity, a transfer may be your only near-term path; if it is not restricted, a new application is usually simpler and cheaper. Our Transfer vs. New Decision Helper walks through the tradeoffs for your situation, and our Quota-State Checker tells you whether your state uses a quota system at all.
Do you file my application for me?
No. LiquorReady is an independent publisher, not a law firm, licensed liquor-license consultant, or broker. We organize public licensing information and give you a personalized planning document; you (or a professional you hire) file the actual application with your state.
Is this legal advice?
No. LiquorReady is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Alcohol licensing rules, fees, and quotas change and vary by state, county, and city. Always confirm current requirements with your state alcoholic beverage authority before making decisions about your lease, buildout, or opening date.
